It’s a functional fitness Friday for sure ! Dang….that’s a lot of “F” words ๐
Today’s blog post is all about functional fitness, and how our every day lives grant us the opportunity to squeeze in a workout, sometimes when we least expect it. What you’re about to see is an insane 5 minute workout I did unintentionally this week as I was on my way to downtown Pittsburgh.
It all began when my alarm went off at 4:30 am. I had to meet a client at the gym by 6:00 am for a one-on-one session, and that meant I had to grab the city transit outside my apartment by 5:20 am. I collected my belongings and headed out the door on a cold and frigid morning, arriving at my bus stop by 5:15 am. Then I realized something. I was missing my cell phone. Oops!
Commence the beginning of the hill sprints!
For those of you who know where I live in the South Side, you’ll know that my bus stop is about 50 yards away from my actual apartment, and my apartment happens to be near the top of a VERY steep hill. With 5 minutes to spare I sprinted up my street and up the stairs to my apartment complex. I grabbed my cell phone out of my apartment and bolted back down the hill to reach my bus stop.
I reached my destination at 5:17 am, but there was one problem. I forgot my breakfast of Greenfed Amasai and my much needed lunch for the day. After a few seconds of cursing in between my 15 seconds of rest, I made the quick decision to run back up the 50 yard hill to grab all my food out of my apartment. I made it up the two flights of stairs (again) and busted through my apartment door. I grabbed all my food out of the apartment and once again, bolted down the hill to reach my bus stop. Clocked in at 5:20 am and wouldn’tย you know, the bus was right there on schedule and I hopped aboard at 5:22 am (though the bus drive gave me a funny look when I scanned my transit card. I’m sure I looked beyond frazzled! haha! ๐ )
This just goes to show you that sometimes, life can be hectic and sometimes we truly are pressed for time when it comes to exercise. But, if we factor in our mad dash sprints to the and from our points of interest, or even set aside 5 minutes a day for a power house of a work out, we find ourselves making progress overall for our health. Sometimes, all we need is 5 minutes a day for a workout to get us pumped up for the day, and that’s real talk, ya heard?
Of course, this is a reminder for me to a) get organized the night before an early morning session and b) make sure coffee is ready and available for early morning decisions ๐
That’s all I have for yinz today! Remember to eat smart, train hard, and enjoy your life!
Love Always,
