Welcome back to round 2 of our Turkish Get Up Protocol! On Monday, we reviewed the key points of the turkish get up using no other resistance other than our own bodies. I spoke before about how important it is to understand the mechanics of the move before we being to add weight with a kettlebell to the lift. Now, we got through part one of the get up just fine, but now it’s time for part two.
First, grab a shoe. Yes, a shoe. YOu will need a shoe with more of a flat surface (ladies, leave your heels behind please 😉 ). Vibram’s, tennis shoes, Chuck Taylor All Stars, or any other athletic shoe should do just fine here. Got your shoe? Great! Get ready for the next part of this series and pay attention to the instruction on WHY practicing turkish get ups with your shoe is so important.
As you can see, making sure we can properly balance the shoe from the entire way through the get up is essential for creating proper tension in the body. When we have the right amount of tension, the shoe will not fall off our fists. Even more, when we have the right amount of tension to stabilize a shoe, we will be able to stabilize heavier weights as time moves forward!.
On Friday, we will wrap up the series on the get up by using a kettlebell. Be on the look out for the grand finale of this weeks get up series and be sure to practice your get ups with your shoe in the meantime!
