Welcome to the new face of the Primal Burgher! Things have certainly changed on the home front here. I moved to Regent Square, moved to a new website location, and all around have been enjoying life in between it all! It’s the time of year for a lot of change. The season of fall is fast approaching, kids are going back to school, and many of us have settled back into our jobs after summer vacations. With all the change in season coming around, I began thinking about the role of change when it comes to making lifestyle modifications for the betterment of our health. After speaking with a number of people about this thing called “change” and what it means to actually get out there and change our health for the better, it occurred to me that change often stirs up a particularly negative emotion in many of us.
That emotion is fear.
You may struggle with the fear of failure, and thoughts of “what if I don’t reach my goal?” may flood your mind. You may even struggle with the fear of success, and thoughts of “what will others think of me if I change?” will pester you. You may even fear the act of changing itself, worrying about taking the first step forward and wondering if it is even worth it for your health. I get it. Believe me. Years ago I was battling my own auto-immune condition while trying my hardest to get back in shape. I saw countless medical providers, spoke with a number of health coaches, tried every last protocol known to mankind (or so it seemed) and studied my Burgher Brains out to try and find some sort of strategic solution to my situation. I was frustrated, feeling ever more isolated, and found myself swimming in pool of fear as I thought “what if I never get through this all?”
So….how did I “get through it?” As difficult as it was, I began to reach out and align myself with people who had conquered illness and reached elite fitness themselves. I soon found myself among some of the nation’s top trainers and nutritional experts. It was worth the push, and having found so many coaches in my life that encouraged me through the plateaus and pushed me to conquer my fears, I have achieved not just a great deal of health, but my own RKC certification to put to use to help coach others.
I met with a client for coffee yesterday at Biddle’s Cafe in Regent Square. She confessed to me that she needed the support, the encouragement, and in her own words the “kick in the butt” to stay motivated as she begins making changes to her life. I asked her what was holding her back before from reaching her goals, and her answer really made me realize how powerful change can be when we are willing to surrender fear.
“I guess I was just afraid to admit I needed help. But…I need help. I’d rather be encouraged to be healthy than risk living a life with health problems. Being unhealthy frightens me more than trying to be healthy. I’d rather step out of my comfort zone than risk complications down the road.”
If you are finding that you’re stuck in a pit of fear, worrying if you will ever achieve health and wellness, I urge you to take the chance. Don’t let life pass you by as you worry about your health. Step out, admit you need help, and make the commitment today to change your life for the better! It’s worth it, believe me, and I am here to encourage you every step of the way!
Remember to eat smart, train hard, and enjoy your life!
