How’s that for a mouthful of a title?
What a week last week was in the life of the avid strength athlete! Yours truly travelled across the states to spend time at the Women’s Fitness Summit, and had some time to talk shop on the Motivation and Muscle Podcast with Eric Fiorillo. While I would like for this post to be about both of those two separate experiences, there seems to be an overarching theme between both of these events in my life that speaks measures beyond words. Today, I want to dive deep into this thing called “submission”, and to talk about internal and external forces that can beat us down mentally. Most importantly, I want to show how we can change our mental framework to live a life worth living that far reaches beyond our current framework.
But first, the back drop to what lead into this own reflection of mine.
“My first step towards health began with a very important question: What can I do today so I won’t die?”- Kelly Coffey
I resonate with the story of Kelly Coffey. As extreme as the above statement may seem, I found myself in a similar place just a few years ago when I was revamping my own health (you can read more about that by snagging a copy of Powerful Pressing). After giving her talk at the Women’s Fitness Summit, I took to journaling about what it means to self-sabotage our own success. It may sound strange, but if you have struggled with your own self-image for years upon years on end, you may find that giving yourself the permission to succeed in the goals you set out for yourself to achieve is difficult. To quote David Whitley, author of the book “Super Human You”, “Your self-image controls everything you do”. Think of yourself in negative terms, and you will reap negative results, circumstances , and an overall negative lifestyle.
More so, there is something to be said about our own internal negativity and attracting more negativity in our lives. This brings me to my recent interview with Eric Fiorillo on the Motivation and Muscle Podcast.
I made my third appearance on the Motivation and Muscle podcast. In the recent interview, I was asked what I thought the phrase “beaten into submission” means. At first, I gave reference to the above comment about personally stopping ourselves short of our own success. I was pressed to dig a little deeper and to think about how our own negativity can reap more external negativity in our lives. This leads to me address certain levels of negativity we may find ourselves surrounded by in our own life. Do you find yourself surrounded by people who are tearing you down? Do you find yourself overhearing a lot of negative talk? This gets back to point one. There IS something to be said about the “Law Of Attraction”. We attract what we know ourselves to be, and we will thereby attract that which we expect of ourselves, whether that be good or bad.

Ending the Cycle Of Negative Conformity
When it comes to your fitness routine, healthy eating habits, or hitting your next personal record in the gym, I would like to challenge you to look at areas of your life that may be hindering your own success. Do you find that you are surrounded by negative people, places, or things? Do you find yourself in a pattern of beating yourself up? Do you joke about not being good enough to achieve a certain level of success (and more importantly, are you REALLY even joking?)?
If there is one thing I have learned over this past year, it is this. We can choose to beat ourselves into our own levels of submission and conform to circumstances that put a ton of negative pressure on ourselves. The good news is that the moment we believe ourselves to be limitless, the moment that we believe we can achieve that which is a worth ideal, we can put forth the effort to change our lives for the better. We become what we think about, and today, I would like to challenge you to arise and be all that you dreamed.
I’ll leave you all with a song a friend of mine put together years ago. It is the very mantra I stand by today. And stay tuned! In the next few days I will be launching a challenge. . .a call to action to help you all ELIMINATE the negative elements in your life and FINALLY reach a point where you can thrive!
