It’s a brand new year, and with the start of the new year comes the start of a lot of new habits, new goals, and your new year resolutions. I am all for starting new journeys, focussing on new goals to achieve, and working towards positive changes for my health and the health of those I serve. Perhaps one of my big take-aways from the previous year was the notion of starting over, “pressing reset”, and being quite alright from starting from what seems like square one all over again. To quote one of my clients directly:
“It’s ok to start from the beginning again. “
“I feel like I am starting all over again.” said one of the newest members to our VIP coaching forum. Having recovered from a fairly horrific car accident, this new trainee now faces new challenges surrounding her own training. A series of injuries from the accident had set her back physically, and with the added time off from not being able to workout to her previous capacity, the “weight creep” set in. I had the honor and privilege of sitting down with this new comrade over the weekend at my “office” to custom design her program, and get to know what her main obstacle was moving forward.
“Having to take the time off to get healthy again was necessary. I had to heal from my accident. I guess my biggest thing right now is starting up again. I know I can get really strong. I just feel bad for having to climb back up my strength ladder.”
There is a term in psychology called “inappropriate guilt”. Under normal circumstances, the feeling of guilt is a sort of warning, an alert that we have truly done something wrong and that we are to change our behaviors accordingly to better ourselves. Inappropriate guilt is when we assign feelings of guilt towards circumstances that were truly out of our control, yet we still feel responsible for them. Case in point is my newest client. Having survived a car accident and needing to take a number of months off to heal, she felt guilty for losing out on her fitness routines and strength gains. I understand the perplexities of being an athlete and having set backs from injuries. Those that are fitness go-getters have a hard time being told to “slow down”, “hang on!” or “be patient”. But sometimes, taking the slow and steady approach is what leads us to success in the long run.
I cannot tell you of the number of personal set backs I experienced in 2016 (side note: this is the last time I am talking about the year of 2016). I was handed a number of random circumstances that tested my patience, strength, and sanity. There was a time where I felt quite guilty myself for taking a much needed rendezvous to settle my mind and map out the very vision for my life. Having taken the time I needed to heal, I came to realize something. I got a hell of a lot strong, much smarter, and ever more determined to bring my health, business, and dream life to full fruition (and if you are not a part of our VIP forum now, do be sure to register for that today!).
Have you experienced a set back that was out of your control that derailed your goals for becoming healthy, strong, and fit?
Do you find that you feel guilty for taking time off to recenter yourself, if not find yourself again?
Most of all, are these feelings of guilt stopping you short of becoming who you know yourself to be deep down inside?
It’s ok to start from the beginning again.
