A Pittsburgh Progressive Calisthenic Candidate!

By jp626

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Greater City of Pittsburgh (and all the good people of the internet), please give a shout out and round of applause to Ryan Williams who is training for his Progressive Calisthenic Certification! Ryan contacted me a while ago to discuss some exercise ideologies and my thoughts on calisthenic training. We got to talking about exercise methodologies and after a good cup or three of coffee, Ryan decided to come down to Primal Fitness Pittsburgh to prepare for his certification in July! HUZZAH RYAN!!!!!! 😀

Now, I’m a BIG fan of body weight training because I found that body weight exercises lead me to BIGGER and BETTER Kettlebell lifts in the long haul. All the hand stand push up practice and pull up bar training can really enhance your lifts, but before I get too distracted by my love for kettlebells, let’s talk about the Progressive Calisthenic Certification (PCC) Workshop and what is required of the candidates going in to this certification.

If you remember my write up on the RKC Kettlebell Certification, I can say that the PCC is the RKC of body weight workshops. This workshop is run by the calisthenic  masters themselves, Al and Danny Kavadlo. Testing, teaching, and demanding strength challenges are involved with this certification. I have been eying up the PCC workshop myself a lot lately since I have been doing more body weight work to rehab an injury I had not too long ago. No worries, this workshop is DEFINITELY on my to do list, but I’ll probably go off for that within the next year. The PCC will teach you everything you need to know to master things like push ups, pull ups, muscle ups, human flag, and much much more! For a comprehensive breakdown of the PCC workshop, visit Dragondoor.com

Instead of giving you all a bit too much to chew on for this Friday read, allow me to direct your attention to the following video published by Dragon Door. Pay attention and you’ll see some seriously amazing feats of strength!

That century tests reminds me of the RKC Snatch test….BRUTAL!

If that hasn’t gotten your attention yet, here’s what to expect from a teaching standpoint here is what you can expect to learn. Note: the following excerpt is taken from Draongdoor.com

Seminar A: Principles of Progression

If an athlete understands the science behind progressive calisthenics, any bodyweight exercise can be broken down into a family of movements that go from “piece of cake” to “superhuman”.
In this seminar, the Instructors discuss:
• Basic leverage techniques (for pulls, presses and squats)
• Advanced leverage techniques (for gymnastic-style holds)
• Working with bilateral, transitional and unilateral sequences
• Different “assistance” tactics and working with training tools
• When and how to apply partial movements, negatives and statics
• Alternative intensity variables

Seminar B: Bodyweight Programming

Simply mastering techniques is not enough to rise to PCC status; you must also have an understanding of how to integrate all this knowledge in the context of programming. This is the broad subject of this straight-to-the point seminar.
Topics covered will include:
• When and how to progress to harder techniques
• Basic programming options and workout templates
• The different methods involved in training for skill, strength and hypertrophy
• Intensity and recovery
• Using mini-progressions and hidden steps
• Thoughts on cross-training and hybrid training (weights, kettlebells, etc.)
• Natural cycling and progressive calisthenics
• Calisthenics for de-conditioned individuals and special populations
• Designing advanced routines
If you’re like Ryan and are really interested in doing the PCC workshop yourself, check out the PCC dates and register today! If you have any questions about training for this certification, you can always feel free to contact me at janelle@primalfitensspittsburgh! Have a great rest of the weekend everyone. Be on the look out for some serious strength training coming to you live from Primal Fitness Pittsburgh!
