With the next couple of Primal Move workshops coming into play, I wanted to take some time to discuss what Primal Move is and how it can benefit the average Joe and serious athletes a like. Don’t get me wrong, I am a strength athlete by nature and really love pressing some heavy stuff above my head. The fact of the matter is is that sometimes, our bodies need to work on not just strength, but mobility as well in order to iron out those heavier lifts. Fine tuning your strength sometimes has more to do with how well oiled the machine is rather than how much stuff you can stack on top of that machine. And of course, YOU are the machine we are talking about here, so let’s make sure your engine is up to speed 😉
First and foremost, the Primal Move system was actually formulated out of the Functional Movement Screen System(FMS) by Gray Cook. The goal of Primal Move, just like the FMS system, is to document certain movement patterns and then work on those movement patterns over time in a manner that allows the body to free itself up, move more fluidly, and get the body back to its ability to move with grace and without pain. As an example, the average American sits for up to 8 hours a day at their desk job which can lead to a lot of tight hip flexors and a lack of thoracic mobility which limits the ability to walk with good posture, let alone squat well. Some of us athletes have dealt with repeated knee pain or even a lack of shoulder mobility that compromises our heavier lifts. If there was a way to free up our tension, work through the pain and stiffness in a way that was fun and invigorating, AND gain some serious strength though body weight exercises only, we would see an increase in our overall athletic performance as well as a new found love for life. Movement without pain, now that rocks!
THIS is exactly what Primal Move does!
But don’t just take my word for it! Take a look at this video below to see how Primal Move can enhance your movement and help you move better and lift bigger!
Speaking of working with clients (as the video above mentioned), I decided to actually check in with a client of mine at Primal Fitness Pittsburgh who regularly attends our Primal Move training sessions. Here’s some personal feed back from what you can expect from practicing fundamental movement patterns at Primal Fitness Pittsburgh.
