Over the weekend I spent time tuning into Ted Talks all about mental strength. my rekindled love for psychology has lead me to follow a particular clinician who understands the power of choice, and how to protect your power to choose the right habits and execute those habits for a healthy life. Tune in to the youtube video below to learn The Secret of Becoming Mentally Strong.
Over the past two years of my life I have seen what my own resurfaced habits had done to my own life. For a while, I began to wonder if the entire world was designed to keep me trapped in a whirlwind of chaos, with no reasonable way out of the storm. I kept replaying a tape in my head so-to-speak, about how I had “lost too much” or “been through too much” to make amends with my own self, let alone anyone else.
And then, I found myself in the old familiar rooms listening to a speaker who had seen the devastation of her own addiction, to the point of being in an out of jail for years.
“Nothing changes if nothing changes” she said, and that message stuck with me enough to start to mapping out what I really wanted to change in my own life.
While away at Cove Forge in 2017, I was approached by a patient who had the kindness to speak with me on the “day I lost everything”, which just so happened to be the day I had a conference call with my counselor at Cove Forge and back to Westmoreland county. That phone call relayed the information to me that I would lose my apartment, car, business, AND all my money and would be forced into long term treatment through the State of Pennsylvania. It was a devastating day to say the least, but that person told me something that fits so well with making definitive changed for your life.
“When you feel like you are boxed into a cage, grab a piece of paper and draw a window. Draw the dreams you want to see come to life outside that window, and visualize all those things you want for your life outside that window coming to fruition. “
Needless to say, I spent the majority of my weekend drawing a new window on a piece of paper, and mapping out my own dreams to come to life.
We are a product of the choices that we make, and if we refuse to make changes for the better, we simply won’t see our lives changes for the better. What do you want your life to become? How strong do you want to be physically? What habits can you change or start to incorporate to make your dreams come true?
Nothing changes if nothing changes. Write out your dreams and visualize them coming to life. You have the power to choose to live the life you deserve to live, so live.
