I was utterly baffled by what I was listening to in the middle of a conversation about fitness, strength training and eating healthy, but my being baffled quickly shifted into the realization that we here in America struggle with a very serious problem plaguing our society more so each day. I’m not here to talk politics today, though some of what I am going to mention today does refer to a bit of public policy (and by no means am I some political expert. Let me repeat this. I AM NOT A POLITICIAN!). I AM a strength coach and I AM precision nutrition coach as well, and if there is one thing that irritates the living hell out of me any more is this growing sense of entitlement with regards to healthcare, or perhaps, health in general. This irritates me NOT because of the people who express the need for health care , but rather this irritates me because getting adequate health care is much harder than it needs to be due to being completely misinformed by the masses , which is NOT the fault of the people seeking out how to eat smart and train hard.
Before you go throwing your hands up in the air and waiving your fists at me for making such a bold statement, allow me to direct you to the very conversation I had with a prospective client.
“I feel like if I have the kind of accountability I need from a coach, I’ll be better equipped to stay on track and reach my weight loss goals. I need that sort of accountability in life, but the truth is I am worried about expenses. My own health insurance premiums match your packages. I would literally have to choose one over the other, and well. . .our own government won’t take kindly to that either.”
Fact: here in the Land of The Free and Home of The Brave, you can be penalized for not having health insurance. From what I understand, this sort of policy is trying to be resolved, but God only knows if / when we have a truly privatized health system in our hands. The point I am making here is that this prospective client has a legitimate need to be healthy, but also raises a legitimate point: it’s expensive to pay for health insurance, and this can cut costs tight for personal training even when you need it.
As a private business owner, my main focus is to EDUCATE people on what to look for when it comes to purchasing and eating healthy food, EDUCATE people on how to train based on certain lifestyle factors (most notably current levels of stress), and construct highly specific programs for my private clients to meet their specific needs. Everything is calculated. Everything is measured out in accordance to their specific needs. Yes, there is an obvious investment when working with me, but the benefits for doing the extra credit far outweigh the costs of higher insurance premiums, expensive prescription mediations, and a laundry list of health problems that are popping up EARLIER in young adults and children.
At age 20, I was stricken with an auto-immune thyroid disease and was told by a doctor that there was no hope for me, except of course to wait for my thyroid to go completely kaput at which point I could go on hormone replacement therapy. To be honest, it would have been easier to just sit around, wait for my medications to come down my pipe, and live that life of misery. We can be so quick to take for granted the advice of medical professionals without first questioning the diagnosis or getting a second opinion. I was pissed off that day in the doctor’s office, and in fact so pissed off I got a new Doctor who understood a more holistic approach to auto-immune conditions and got me on a new diet, exercise, and bi monthly blood screening to track my progress. I have been in remission for nearly a decade now. It took a year and a half of eating whole food, building up my exercise capacity, and eventually hiring my own coach to get my health back, but having the low insurance premiums I have now, not needing medications, and being at an elite level of strength far out weigh the cost of what would have been a life of expensive prescription medications and doctors visits.
Dear Americans, I feel your pain! I was once just like you, sick and tired of being sick and tired and paying a hefty price for it all! Where you invest your time and money matters. Are you in and out of the doctors office more often than not for high blood pressure, cholesterol problems, diabetes and the like while you are left with nothing but a list of prescriptions and no solid advice on how to eat smart and train hard for your own body type? Fear not! This isn’t your fault. YOU have been misinformed! The good news? You don’t have to be a slave to your own health problems. The distance between your healthy dreams and reality requires only one step: ACTION! Let me help you learn the habits you need to succeed in your nutrition, strength, and long term health!
