Greetings primal enthusiasts! I hope you all had a fabulous weekend and I hope you all kept active. My weekend was filled with a lot of kettlebell snatch practice as well as some leisure strolling around the beautiful South Side of Pittsburgh. The weather has been gorgeous here in Da Burgh lately, so my workouts and leisure activities have been moving more and more outdoors. And speaking of working out, my training volume has been getting pretty intense lately. With my HKC certification up in September I have been doing a lot of swings, snatches, and clean and press ladders. With the intensity of my work load and because the humidity can be INSANE in this city, I decided to take a look at sports drinks to fuel my body during long lifting sessions.
Yeah, I know. Sports drinks are kind of a misnomer when it comes to primal fitness. In fact, most of the major sports drinks on the market are often just sugary beverages that are better off saved as a mixer for your weekend cocktail (that is, if you so choose to drink in the first place). However, I have found some use for a particular line of beverages that may actually have yunz thinking twice about their use when dealing with demanding workloads. PAY ATTENTION CHILDREN! You’re about to get schooled on SueroViv!
SueroViv is a cultured whey beverage. I know what you’re thinking. You are probably thinking something to the effect of “SAY WHAT!?!?!”. Let me explain what “cultured whey beverage” implies in terms of your nutrition. Many of you may be familiar with whey in terms of whey protein powder often added to your post workout smoothie. What most people may not realize is that liquid whey is actually a tart and golden looking substance that is left over once you separate it from the curds for cheese. While whey protein has the added benefits of building muscle, liquid whey is loaded with vitamins and minerals. The liquid whey in SueroViv happens to carry a high level of naturally occurring sodium, B vitamins, potassium, and acidified organically bound calcium. In lay mans terms, this means this beverage is LOADED WITH ELECTROLYTES which is what you, as an athlete, are going to need with seriously demanding training routines. Another benefit you will get form SueroViv is that this stuff has been enhanced with probiotics (HORRAY GUT HEALTH!). I did a blog post on probiotics previously so if you need a crash course on those guys, take a look at my post here. Finally, SueroViv is infused with essential oils form fruits and vegetables. What does that mean in terms of nutrition? Well, it means you now have the added bonus of Vitamin C to boost your energy during intense exercise. Can I get a “WOOT WOOT” ?
So what does this stuff actually taste like? To date, I have taste tested every flavor except for SueorViv Citrus. Now, to be completely honest, I actually had a bad experience with the first flavor of SueroViv I ever tried. I had sworn off the stuff actually because of having a flavor disagree with my palate, but after trying the other flavors, I can honestly say my opinion has changed. Below is a list of all the flavors I have tried to date. I am rating them on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the least appealing to me personally and 10 for being the most awesome beverage I have consumed as a living and breathing human being.
SueroViv Green: 10. This stuff has a citrusy and slight wheatgrass flavor to it. It’s a whey, veggie green beverage and I am SOLD on it. If SueroViv Green was a man, I’d marry him in a heart beat! And that’s real talk, ya heard? I have never felt so rejuvenated after drinking a sports drink. Guys, you have to try it! I am telling you from personal experience that you will not be dissappointed. GET IT NOW!
SueroViv Gold: 9. This is a neutral flavored product. Honestly, it has a flavor similar to plain Amasi. Because I am an Amasi addict, I give SueroViv Gold a raiting of 9 out of 10. However, I wouldn’t be suprised if the average individual didn’t find it too appetizing. SueroViv Gold has a truly nuetral flavor to it, but that can be a good thing if you a really sensitive to sweet drinks. A trainer friend of mine once told me she adds whey protein to SueroViv to make a quick protein shake. If you are going to do something like that with any flavor of SueroViv, I think SueroViv Gold would be your best mixer!
SueroViv Raspberry : 7. This stuff is a little sweet for my taste buds. However, I actually don’t mind the sweetness as the tart flavor of the raspberry balances that aspect of the drink. If you crush some ice and add SueroViv Raspberry to it, you end up with a really awesome and way healthier version of Italian Ice. TRY THIS! In fact, you should buy SueroViv Raspberry RIGHT NOW so you can try your Whey Cool Italian Ice this weekend! Just sayin’. 😉
SueroViv Orange Cinnamon: 3. I am not a fan of this flavor. In fact, this was the first flavor I tried that intially had me swear of all things SueroViv on twitter. In my opinion, this flavor is too sweet, has too much cinnamon, and is just plain awkward. However, I know people out there that absolutely love this flavor. It could simply be a case of my palate not agreeing with SueroViv Orange Cinnamon. You by all means don’t have to agree with me about this review. I am just sharing my experience here to be completely truthful about my reaction to the stuff. SueroViv Orange Cinnamon and I just don’t get along.
As I stated earlier, I have not yet tasted SueroViv Citrus, but that is on my bucketlist of things to try for next month’s Beyond Organic order. I will keep you all posted on the release date for that review. Also, I wanted to inform yinz of a little something something regarding SueroViv. With the exception of SueroViv Gold, all the other flavors do carry a sugar content of about 14g per 8 oz serving. Considering that SueroViv bottles come in 16 oz containers, you will be consuming 28g of sugar if you consume the entire bottle. Now, that may not be a huge deal if you are doing high volume work in outrageous humidity, but it may be something to keep in mind if A) your training volume isn’t too intense and B) you are maintaining certian body fat percentages. I just wanted to throw that out there so all you fitness fanatics don’t pull me aside and scold me for the carbohydrate content in these drinks. I will say this though. Compared to other sports drinks on the market, the sugar content in SueroViv is a fraction of what other products contain.Oh, not to mention that the sugar content is coming from organic honey which is WAY EASIER for your body to metabolize. Again, just sayin’!
Well folks, that about sums it up for me. Be on the look out for more Primal news on the blog this week! As always, remember to eat smart, train hard, and enjoy your life (and seriously consider picking up SueroViv today. 😉 )
Love Always,
Janelle
