Welcome back to Primal Fitness Pittsburgh! After nearly two weeks away from major happenings at the facility, I am happy to report that operations are back up and running! HUZZAH!!!! I wanted to take some time on this Monday to discuss the training methodology at Primal Fitness Pittsburgh. I have received a number of emails lately from people that are frustrated, fed up, and ultimately burnt out from extreme exercise programs. “I wanted to look and feel like I did in my 20’s” one email read, “but I feel like I’ve set myself back too far now! Where can I even start ? Where do I begin? Can you help me?”
It pains me to read messages like this, because to be honest, this was me nearly 5 years ago( and I WAS in my 20’s feeling trapped in a body that wasn’t working the way I wanted it to work.) I too was frustrated, fed up, and burned out from beating myself up with extreme exercise programs and rigid dieting that left me more confused and frustrated when I started. I was also struggling with an auto-immune problem at the time too. You can read about that in this post. So. . for those of you reading this post today, believe me. I feel your pain! But hang on for just a second here, there really is a way to end this cycle of confusion and reap all the benefits of fat loss, muscle building, and a general feeling of awesome! Before making an important decision regarding your fitness goals, ask yourself this question: “Where am I?” Many people start off with the right intentions. They want to lose weight, build muscle, eat healthy etc. The problem lies in not knowing their own starting point and personal limitations at the beginning (emphasis on the “Beginning” part here because I personally believe that people can overcome ANY limitation as long as they set their mind to it). Sure, you can drop 21 pounds in 21 days, and some of my clients have done just that. But the truth here is that most people take a good 6 months to make permanent, life lasting changes to their health. Hell, it may even take you a year because there are a TON of factors you simply MUST CONSIDER before moving forward. All too often, I see too many good people with too many good intentions for their health fail to ask themselves the “where am I?” question. If you truly don’t know you’re starting point, then you will be tempted to take extreme measures to change your body. Losing weight is great, but murdering yourself in the gym for hours on end to lose weight is a sure fire way to injure yourself and trash your immune system in the process. Who wants to be sick, tired, and injured anyway? This brings me to my next point.
The objective opinion of a qualified fitness professional matters. It matters A LOT! Even mores, qualified coaches will hold you accountable to reaching your goals.
Perhaps the biggest part of my job as head instructor at Primal Fitness Pittsburgh is fine tuning people’s programs based on their current physical state of affairs. So many of us want to jump right into new programs and new routines because we feel entitled to a new body and we will do anything to get immediate results. The truth is that, well, it really just doesn’t work like that. After spending years of trying to rush my own self into immediate results (be it strength gains, fat loss, or whatever else), I have found that the most sustainable way to reaching my own goals the the goals of my clients is to know our starting points and to make a strategic plan from those starting points. It helps to meet with someone who has been there before and who has also worked with a number of people to reach their goals as well.

My workouts to date rarely exceed 30 minutes a day. My total workout time per week is roughly 3 hours, TOTAL. I move better from all the mobility work I have learned and have lost weight and gained strength through basic body weight routines and kettlebell lifts. No, that is no joke. No, there is no sorcery involved with this;) And yes, it really CAN be this easy!
